Breast Reconstruction and Augmentation

At Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, our board certified plastic surgeons perform a variety of reconstruction and augmentation procedures using the patients own tissue rather than implants. Although we do offer implants as an option, we pride ourselves in our ability to offer a more "natural" solution for many women.

Some of the procedures we offer include:

Lipo-transfer fat graft

In this procedure we utlize a special liposuction machine designed to retain the fat cells that maintain their viability thus reducing the chance that volume will be lost over time due to necrosis of the fat.

This is an outpatient procedure with liposuction and then injection of the fat derived from the liposuction into the breast. The size of the augmentation will be dependent on how much fat is available for injection. Most women can expect to increase in size by approximately 1 cup size.

This procedure can be used for cosemetic augumentation or reconstruction after lumpectomy or partial mastectomy as the result of breast cancer or other breast disfigurement.

This procedure avoids the risk of encapsulation often experienced with implants. And, because it is the patients own tissue, there is no rejection.

DIEP Flap Reconstruction

Generally recommended for mastectomy patients, this is a muscle sparing procedure that utilizes the fat and tissue from the abdomen to form a breast. This technique involves microsurgery to attach blood vessels that support the tissue in it's new location.

Similar to a fat graft, this procedure involves the patient's own tissue so there is no risk of rejection or encapsulation. However, this is a more involved procedure and does involve 2 - 3 days in the hospital.

In California all insurance must cover reconstruction for patients who have had breast cancer. Our hospital and physicians can help obtain insurance authorization for your procedure.

If you are seeking a cosmetic procedure, you will most likely be required to pay cash for the procedure.
